The Music Director Search Series is a four-concert showcase of the prospective choices for the orchestra's next music director. Each concert will feature a different conductor.
At the end of the series, the orchestra's board of directors will select the new music director based on the feedback of the musicians, the audience, and the search committee.
This music director search series is a unique opportunity for the community to experience the talents of four highly qualified conductors and to help shape the future of the RJO.
On Sunday, March 10, 2024, at The Theatre, saxophonist Greg Johnson will take center stage to lead the Reno Jazz Orchestra in a program titled "Jazz Around the World," featuring music from Kansas City, Iceland, Canada, and Tokyo. The concert will include some of Johnson's own compositions and also feature him as a saxophone soloist with the band.
Dr. Greg Johnson is quickly becoming recognized as an important voice in the jazz community. His distinctive saxophone sound and compositional style have found their way into multiple genres of Jazz, Classical, and Popular music. He has toured and performed with notable Pop and Rock acts and has appeared in concert and on over 40 mainstream recordings with jazz legends Curtis Fuller, Billy Taylor, Bob Mintzer, and many more.
AND, this particular concert is the last of our Music Director Search Series! Come help us choose our final candidate as you experience our fourth and last candidate, Greg Johnson, take the stage. Shakespearian Actors will join the RJO for a performance of Ellington's Such Sweet Thunder, and the students of the 2023 Jazz Workshop will be introduced.
"The Reno Youth Jazz Orchestra will open for the RJO and guest artist Cliff Porter in a concert of holiday jazz favorites.
The Reno Jazz Orchestra is joined by guest composer and trombonist Dean Sorenson with Josh Reed directing.
