BIG BAND JAZZ IS ALIVE IN NORTHERN NEVADA’S YOUNG MUSICIANS — AND RYJO IS WHERE THEY GROW.

The Reno Youth Jazz Orchestra (RYJO), founded in 2006, exists to develop the next generation of jazz artists through rigorous musical training, ensemble experience, and a supportive community of peers and mentors. While our “About” page highlights our history and mission, this Education page focuses on what RYJO provides specifically for young musicians seeking to advance their skills, confidence, and artistic voice.

What Students Gain by Becoming a Member

RYJO is more than a performing ensemble — it’s a comprehensive youth jazz education program. Students receive:

  • Advanced ensemble training in big band and small‑group settings

  • Improvisation coaching rooted in jazz language, listening, and creativity

  • Sectional instruction from experienced jazz educators and professional musicians

  • Performance opportunities at regional festivals, community concerts, and special events

  • Musicianship development including theory, ear training, rhythm studies, and stylistic awareness

RYJO I & RYJO II — Two Ensembles, One Purpose

RYJO I — Advanced Ensemble For top middle and high school jazz musicians ready for challenging repertoire, fast-paced rehearsals, and expanded performance opportunities. Select members may also participate in a small combo, gaining additional improvisation and gig experience.

RYJO II — Developmental Ensemble Designed for younger or emerging musicians who are building foundational jazz skills. RYJO II offers a supportive environment where students learn ensemble basics, jazz style, and improvisation fundamentals — preparing them for eventual advancement into RYJO I.

Both ensembles are audition-based and part of the Reno Jazz Orchestra’s broader commitment to youth jazz education.

Auditions — Your Path Into the Orchestra

Auditions ensure that each student is placed in the ensemble where they will grow the most. The audition process evaluates:

  • Tone and technique

  • Sight-reading

  • Jazz style and articulation

  • Improvisation (optional for RYJO II, encouraged for RYJO I)

  • Ensemble readiness

The RYJO Challenge — A Signature Learning Experience

The RYJO Challenge is a unique educational initiative designed to motivate students, strengthen fundamentals, and deepen their connection to jazz. It includes:

  • Progressive skill benchmarks for rhythm, scales, articulation, and improvisation

  • Listening assignments that introduce students to essential jazz recordings

  • Technique goals tailored to each instrument

  • Creative tasks such as transcribing solos or composing short phrases

  • Recognition for students who complete all challenge levels

The Challenge helps students build consistency, musicianship, and pride in their progress — and it reinforces the habits that make great jazz players.
