Reno has a rich history of big band swing as a part of its casino showroom legacy. So many great singers from Sammy Davis Jr., Rosemary Clooney, and Tony Bennett graced the casino showrooms but none held sway more than Frank Sinatra. I had the pleasure of backing all those artists but there was a special electricity when Sinatra hit the stage. We are familiar with the "tabloid Frank" who made his private life public for fifty years. But it is his voice that commands attention and is his true legacy.
Lately, I've been pondering, why teach jazz? Is it in part because one needs a job to pay the bills? Perhaps teaching jazz was an additional requirement from a school administrator. Maybe, you chose to teach jazz for personal fulfillment. Of course, it might be as simple as it's SO DANG fun!
One of my favorite days of the year is the Reno Jazz Orchestra's (RJO) Jazz in the Schools event. An all-day event of student jazz bands performing at UNR and this year an evening concert features the RJO and our guest artist Aaron Serfaty. It thrills me to see the next generation of jazz musicians honing their craft. This, our 25th year, featuring 20 middle and high school jazz bands from our community as well as the Fernley and Tahoe High Schools.
The Reno Jazz Orchestra (RJO) is presenting A Very Soulful Christmas on Dec. 21 at 2pm at UNR’s Nightingale Hall. This is the first concert of a trio of concerts we are calling, The Quintessence Series. Our music director, Greg Johnson, has created all new arrangements of some of your favorite holiday songs to highlight the vocal talent of Tasche, our featured guest artist. The holiday concert is always special to the RJO because the Reno Youth Jazz Orchestra (RYJO) opens the show as they have since 2006. Nichole Heglund is the new RYJO music director and RYJO season 19 is sponsored by CJ Walters in memory of Larry Walters.
The Reno Jazz Orchestra (RJO) is presenting two concerts at our new home, the Note-Able Music Therapy Services building on Orovada Street in Reno, on November 16 at 7:30pm and November 17 at 2:00pm. While going to college in San Francisco during the seventies, as a musician, the cultural diversity of the city introduced me to a wealth of music styles I would not have experienced otherwise. Back then, I would take my trombone to church to perform at a morning service. In the afternoon, I would play in a marching band in Chinatown for a Chinese funeral where the band performing hymns would lead a parade of mourners in trucks and cars. Then it was off to Mission Street at night to play Salsa. Those, along with performing in rock bands, big bands, and orchestras were all great experiences. It was in 1975 that the Salsa band’s conga player invited me over to listen to some of his new records. When he put on The Sun of Latin Music I was blown away with what I heard and have been a fan ever since...
The University of Nevada, Reno is hosting the 62nd Reno Jazz Festival April 25 – 27, 2024. Produced by UNR's School of the Arts jazz faculty, the festival showcases jazz artists at the top of their game as well as student ensembles from throughout the country. Founded in 1962 by John Carrico and continued under the direction of Larry Engstrom, UNR faculty members Peter Epstein and Adam Benjamin now co-lead this year's festival. . .
The RJO embarked on a conductor search this past fall to find a permanent replacement for me. I had the privilege of leading the orchestra for sixteen years and have been enjoying seeing the candidates lead the orchestra. Three of the candidates have already led the orchestra (more on that later) with one more to go, Dr. Greg Johnson. He will lead the orchestra March 10 featuring his compositions and arrangements.
